I’m Amethysta Herrick, Ph.D.—scientist, storyteller, and professional overthinker of all things identity. Also, I happen to be a transgender woman.
My work dives deep into the origin and nature of identity, particularly gender, because let’s be honest—figuring out who we are is a full-time job, and I’ve made it mine. Through my writing, podcasts, and videos, I explore these topics freely on The Purplepaw Blog—the website I founded so we can actually have these conversations without someone shouting into the void (or worse, Twitter).

- Earned a B.S. in Chemistry at UC San Diego (1993)
- Took it up a notch with a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Georgia (1998)
- Spent 25 years in software as an engineer, architect, and manager (because science alone wasn’t enough chaos for me)
- Lifelong student of psychology, philosophy, and sociology (because understanding people is harder than quantum mechanics)
- Full Member of WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health), the folks who set the global Standard of Care for gender-affirming healthcare
