DSM-6 may want biomarkers to diagnose gender dysphoria, but gender identity is not a blood test. You are far too complex to be defined by biology alone.

The committee writing the next DSM wants to emphasize biomarkers as a diagnostic tool for psychology. Where biology fits is clear: biomarkers can help diagnose medical pathologies. Where biology fails is when we try to shoehorn human behavior into a lab result.

Hunting for the "gay gene," the "trans gene" - or even the voyeur gene or the narcissist gene - turns psychology into a physical check-up. And pathologizing the human experience could make affirming treatments less available, not more.
