What Is Gender? (And Why the Dictionary Definition Fails)
Layering the physical, psychological, and social - image by the author

"Can you define the word 'gender'?"

It sounds like a simple question, but when I received it as a comment on the podcast with DR Z PHD, it reminded me how complex the answer really is.

Most definitions of gender are too simple, too political, or scientifically inaccurate. In this discussion, we fix that.

I break down my original scientific theory of gender. We are moving past the rhetoric to look at the four distinct layers that make up who we are:

Physical: The biological reality of the body
Cognitive: The internal sense of self inside our body
Behavioral: How we express that self knowing who we are
Social: How we moderate our expression depending on those around us

If you are tired of the screaming matches and want a definition grounded in science and philosophy, you are in the right place.
